How to catch an AI making things up: a 5-minute check that works

AI tools write fluent, confident answers, and they are exactly as confident when they are wrong. That is not a bug you can switch off. It is how the technology works, so the checking has to be yours.

Why it happens

These tools generate the most plausible next words, not a verified answer from a database of facts. Plausible and true usually overlap, but not always, and the confident tone never changes. The riskiest content is the most specific: names, dates, numbers, quotes, laws, web addresses and references.

The five-minute routine

  • Ask for sources, then open them. Invented references are common. If you cannot find the source, treat the claim as unproven.
  • Verify one specific detail. Pick a name, a date or a figure and confirm it somewhere reliable. If one detail is wrong, doubt the rest.
  • Re-ask in a new chat, in different words. If the two answers disagree on a fact, neither is trustworthy yet.
  • Check the numbers at the source. For prices, laws, statistics and medical or financial points, go to the official page.
  • Ask for the other side. Request the strongest objection to the answer. Weak spots tend to show up quickly.

A better way to prompt

Paste in the text you trust and say: answer only from the text below, and say if it does not contain the answer. You are no longer asking it to remember. You are asking it to read, which it does far more reliably.

Used this way, AI becomes a fast first draft and a patient assistant, rather than an authority you must obey.
